is it possible metallica is...gulp...GOOD again?!?
before you say "no, of course not, they've sucked for at least fifteen years," listen to this tune and tell me it doesn't kindasorta sound like something that they might have written between "...and justice for all" and the black album:

could it be possible that the subtraction of bob rock and the addition of rick rubin has worked some sort of magic, here?

I am not going to say that its great, and perhaps that's because I am bitter about the rodes Metallica has chosen, both in music and douche baggery. But I won't say that it sucks either, causes its the best sounding thing I have heard from Metallica in, like you said, "15 years".

i'll have to hear the album. but it actually sounds like the metallica i grew up on, pretty much. tuning the guitars back up to E really makes a big difference.

very intrigued. i was intrigued by st. anger, too, until i actually heard the music. strangely, hearing this actually makes me somewhat hopeful.

yeah, I was excited about St Anger too, but all because they said it was gonna be like their early stuff. that was a lie. This is at least a teaser that perhaps they will return.

Mostly though, I am replying now cause in my early morning trance I see that I typed "rodes" instead of "roads" and I should be scolded for that.

i think they actually thought "st. anger" was some sort of return-to-roots thing. but they were so very wrong. that album is like a comedy album, it really is. i suspected it was bob rock's fault, and hearing this makes me wonder if he was even more of a poisoning element than i had even imagined.

yeah, i take this song as a good sign. it sorta reminds me of "harvester of sorrow"!

if any band really needs to make a comeback, it's metallica. they need redemption.

I'd rather have something written between Kill em All and Puppets. This still sounds pretty flat to me.

you want to ride the lightning, it appears.

i feel like the elements sound like they're there. i think the song is a little longish and maybe some of the arrangement could've been messed with, but it's just weird to hear a new metallica song and not feel like i want to cry.

i mean, i think it sounds like "...and justice for all" in parts. am i crazy?

Yeah, sounds more like Puppets to me. As you mentioned above, tuning back to standard E (he's using the ol' white explorer again, I haven't seen that since ...justice) makes a remarkable difference.

And yes, Bob Rock is poison. Maybe he made the drums sound a little bigger on the black album compared to justice, but nothing good came out of that partnership. Just hearing James' singing on the Bob records make them all seem like comedy albums.

This next one may be worth a(free)download.
