    Day 17: An Art Piece

owl and pussycat by jay long

    Photobucket

i love his color palate and slightly cold storybook feel.

i came across jay long at the uptown art fair in 2004, and this painting caught my eye. it's a long story, but this peice was the crossroads for a million coincidences that week. i've been wanting one of his paintings forever, and have tried to find him at the art fair every year since. for a while, he wasn't offering prints of owl and pussycat on his site. but, because of this journal entry, i checked back today...and now he does. i may use some of my christmas bonus for such a dream...

    http://www.jaylongstudio.com/

jay long is also really special to me in another way. if you go to my profile page, you'll see i've listed him in in my interests. if you click on it, you'll see there's only 3 people on lj that list him as an interest: myself, taliswyn, and bardhorse. thing is, talisqyn and bardhorse are actually the same person, one miss amy from wisconsin. this similarity (plus the odd coincidence of a mutual aquantince showing up in pictures of a halloween party she hosted) led us to a conversation and then to a friendship. only, she actually owns some of his work, so i'm a jealous beast about that. grr rar!

here are a few of his other prints i wouldn't mind having on my wall.

Day 16: A Song That Makes You Cry

i saw this one coming up on the list and i had to think about it. because there are a few, mostly those that look back to better times or long for what could have been. i cry because of beauty, not sorrow.

    "the promise" by tracy chapman
"i know you by heart" by eva cassidy
"how could i ever know" from the secret garden broadway recording
"a little fall of rain" and the finale from les miz

but the two that hit me the hardest:

"both sides now" by joni mitchell
specifically the newer version. the one she did in the heyday seems too folky and anthemy. but the latest one where her voice is all gravelly and you can HEAR that she has lived through all of this hurt; that's powerful. and, of course, it's married in my mind to the scene it appears in "love actually" when emma thompson realizes that her husband is cheating on her. so hard.

"ashokan farewell/sullivan ballou letter" from the ken burns' civil war documentary soundtrack. it's this lone violin and a reading of a letter from ballou to his wife, cautioning her that he may die in the upcoming battle...and he did. i'm serious. look it up. by the time you get to the line where he reads, "but oh sarah, if the dead can come back to this earth..." and talks about being the wind in her hair, you're done.

the state and county of things.
i am sickies. it's a bad cold, and one that will probably get worse before it gets better. i'm relying on my friend, dayquil to get me through the day, but i refuse to be on it when i drive tonight because it gave me woosy head yesterday and i will not chance that while i am driving furry friends around.

omg, do i love falstaff? a little too much. what an awesome dog. he's the best christmas date ever.

now rico. there's another story. i'm worried about him a bit because he's not been eating much unless i'm around...and i haven't been around much*. he kind of stays in his hidey home and pouts. at first i thought he might be sick, but he's pooping, so it can't be too serious.

about a week ago i noticed he wasn't finishing his food and was tucking away in his house. so i took him out and sat on the bed and we watched some tv together. and he just sat there and let me pet him...i wasn't even holding him there and he stayed. this is like rico in bizzaroland. totally opposite behavior. when he's in his cage he generally wants my attention, and when he's out, he just wants to be free of me. not so right now, it's a bit troubling that he's so calm.

but, as i say, he's pooping, and in rodentspeak, that's a relief. there's not much else i can do for him and he seems otherwise fine. i'm hoping that getting him home will chipper him up a little, since i'll be around and he gets 4x the attention due to mom and dad and raisins. if that doesn't cheer him up, i'll look to a vet after the holidays.

*laura's been asking me to come join her over new years and i can't because of prior committment over that weekend. it prompted me to take a look at my calendar and i realized i haven't really been around on the weekends since almost halloween. i went home when lars was born. the next weekend was cat-sitting in bloomington. then home again for thanksgiving, out to madison, and the weekend dad towed my car home. then last weekend i was up at noe and ben's, and this weekend is christmas. no wonder i'm getting sick/rico's pissed. i'm thinking a new years in bed with cocoa, crafts, & cartoons is a good idea.

in any case, i'm looking forward to this weekend. i should make it to the ranch just as the snow starts accumulating, according to the weather channel. and then i'm in for the holiday and it can snow all it wants. food, rest, and a dog. perfect. see? i don't want much.

    have a happy one, y'all.

    Day 15: A Fanfic

i don't really do a ton of fanfic. i will skim through some for amusement's sake, but really, i get irritated when people try to bend cannon to their will. generally you get a lot of OOC stuff (out of character) and then it's not really the character anymore, it's the writer playing the character, which isn't the same at all.

every once in a while though, you have someone who really understands, and that's fun. but you have to wade through a lot of crap to find it.

fanfic i have read extends to harry potter, star wars, star trek, doctor who, lost, ramna, labyrinth, and franz ferdinand. geez. maybe i've read more than i think.

most of it's trash. especially the harry potter, star wars, and star trek stuff. but i've read a lot of nice little internal character pieces with lost and ranma, and a few cute labyrinth introspections.

then there's just reading for the giggle factor. i'm not a huge fan of slash, but circa 2006 there was a huge flux of franzfic that was AWESOME and actually well-written. (i especially like the one where nick and alex meet as german and english officers in a foxhole during WWII.)

so i'll admit that i like a bit of love and/or sex going on if it's done in a way that isn't too self-indulgent to the author. i mean, that's what fanfic's for, right? to continue the story? to finish the fantasy? to read smutty smut smut smut starring the characters you've come to know and love?

that being said, here's a link to my favorite doctor who fic (okay, the only one i really got through). it's NSFW and deals with events after bad wolf bay in "journey's end." enjoy.

    Day 14: A Non-Fictional Book

    Photobucket

if you know me at all, you know how much i love and push this book. not only is it fascinating and informative, it's funny and touching too. this was mary roach's first (and best) book, and it's prompted me to read everything she does. i don't really find a point in re-reading non-fiction books, but i'd read this one again in a heartbeat just for entertainment.

i'm also going to list this one:

    Photobucket

because it's a one-stop non-fic that helped me out a lot in my understanding of the christian faith. it's been a while since i read it, so i can't remember if it has a big anti-christian agenda or not, but i don't remember it as a negative book, merely a scholarly approach to some of the biblical text and an argument for being a well-read christian vs. a sheep. he goes into the christmas story and its blatant borrowing of the egyptian myth of the birth of osiris (which would be christianity's first of many appropriations of pagan faiths), and aramaic slang and its misinterpretation in the texts, most notably in the phrase "son of god/messiah" and the resurrection of lazarus. there's also a lot of good stuff in there on the apocrypha too, which i am heavily interested in. fun stuff.

    what is it exactly?
so far, cray has been a bit of a bust. not just in the lack of awesome nerdy boys, but in the lack of anyone ever. apparently, there's a lot of out-of-state seminars going on, so they won't all be here until after the new year. (i know this because the building sends us status updates on the parking situation, which is a bit over-fuddled since they came in.)

anyway. until today, i have seen no cutey nerdy boys (excepting the one as i was leaving one day and might have said something to, had he not been on the phone.). and then bam. i take a break to grab a V8-splash (trying to ward off impending sickness) and there are three in the skyway one right after the other.

and not a single one makes eye contact.

please note that i do not go out of my way to force eye contact on boys nor feel the need to be oggled or "noticed" by any means. it's just an observation i have made that dudes who are "out of my league" tend to stare, but the nerdy brand i like avoid me like the plague. it's very perplexing.

i won't be wanting/needing anything from anybody for a while, but i may put some thought into polishing off my cyberdating profile sometime next year. it seems nerdies are only comfortable approaching or making contact with humans through a computer interface or other likewise non-organic conductor.

    Day 13: A Fictional Book

    Photobucket

i remember waking up to NPR one morning and hearing neil read a passage from this and needing to order it immediately. he went on to explain how fascinated he was with rudyard kipling's "the jungle book" about a boy that is orphaned as a baby and raised by jungle animals. so he wrote a book about a boy that's orphaned as a baby and raised by ghosts in a graveyard. and it translates beautifully. silas is baghera, jack is sher kahn, the ghost of the witch is baloo, the goblins are the monkeys, etc. but it all has that gaiman gothic charm. i remember reading the first chapter and wondering if it was too scary for children. but the thought was fleeting. kids can endure so much, especially when the hero is much like themselves and the scariness is also exciting. and, as you can see, it won the newberry, so there's a whole committee out there that thinks kids should read it for their own betterment. and i agree. but adults can enjoy it too, and be scared by it too, and cry at the end...like i did.

    i think i need a re-read.

Day 12: Whatever Tickles Your Fancy

carin took me out to the MN orchestra last night, and these are some thoughts on the evening.

i thought the conductor was going to be a girl because the program listed "courtney." no. it was a boy. a very pretty irish boy. and we were in the second row. he's got a nice backside. but then he'd turn around and speak all irishy and it was love. let me tell you, that boy knows how to wave his baton around, if you know what i mean.

the first violins second chair looked like al pacino. i had to stifle a lot of giggles through the concert because now i know what al pacino looks like playing a violin. and it's hilarious.

the second chair violist had really poor posture and a wondering foot. he kept looking around. i think he might be an idiot savant.

THEY USED AN ACTUAL CELESTA FOR THE SUGAR PLUM FAIRY. i'm so sick of hearing hanging bells or *shudder* synths. what a nice surprise.

carin makes a good date. she puts up with my shenanegans.

during the nutcracker pas de deux, right after that lovely harp solo, there's a couple beats of silence. and in that silence, someone onstage moved their chair or something, because it sounded like a big fart. perfect timing. i enjoyed that.

i forgot that strauss wrote so many polkas. father of the waltz, yes. but also godfather of the polka. and was he german? yes. and were his polkas popular in austria? yes. you know who has two thumbs and can trace her family tree back to germany and austria? THIS GIRL. and? swedish. polka is in my blood on both sides. i was BORN to play the accordion.

did i mention there were cookies and cheesecake bites? because there were.

prokofiev's troika! fun!!!! SOOOOO russian. so much kenetic energy in a tune. love the russian composers.

it's bad enough that people have forgotten to shut the hell up at a rock concert, but now classical concerts too? LAME.

i could only see the floutist's face from the eyes up over his stand. you can really tell when he's playing because his eyebrows go CRAZY.

i don't think audiences should be encouraged to clap along with classical music. if i were in that orchestra, that would drive me batshit.

cello solos still make me piss myself a little.

Day 10: A Photo Of You Taken Over Ten Years Ago

aw. i so wanted to put the brownie picture up. it's my favorite. unfortunately, i don't have a copy available to me right now. so i'll do the only pic that qualifies as older than 10 years.

    Photobucket

this is circa 1997, back in the test years for renegade comedy olympics. i say test years because:

    1) we got much better with time and stewing in our own stage-relationship juices. i know these are the early years by the white shirts. (we later got team-color shirts, and after that, actual jerseys with our names embroidered on them. fancy.)

    2) manny is in the photo and she didn't stick with it long after we were cast. i, however, lost three wonderful years to it.

    3) we're all standing in a fkn line. jody got pretty angry about that early on.

    4) we were all still relying on "funny hats" to give color to the scene. yeah. we got over that shit eventually.

pictured here are michael pallanche, myself, manny wenberg, jody kujawa, and patrick mines in what is probably a very bad game of "play's the thing" with jody as anchor.

wow. i've grown a chest since then.
